Chinese and Ukrainian Communities Rally for Ukraine’s Independence in Amsterdam
On August 24, 2025, marking the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, the Ukrainian community in the Netherlands, alongside Chinese dissidents and anti-CCP activists, held a rally at Amsterdam Dam Square under the theme Stand with Ukraine – Solidarity for Ukraine Independence Day. The event called on the international community to recognize the threat posed by the Russia-China axis to global freedom and to express heartfelt support for the Ukrainian people.
The rally was organized by Jamal Statsenko and the local Ukrainian community. The Chinese group Voice of Anti-Communism Netherlands applied separately to the city government for the support demonstration. The event drew many Ukrainian immigrants, Dutch citizens, and international supporters who joined for photos and interaction.
Event Atmosphere
By 1:30 PM, piano excerpts of the Ukrainian patriotic song Oy u luzi chervona kalyna filled the square, symbolizing life and freedom. Volunteers distributed 500 English leaflets explaining Ukraine’s independence history and its ongoing struggle. Attendees waved blue and yellow flags of Ukraine, while independence advocates from Cantonia, Kwangsixi, and Jinland raised flags symbolizing anti-colonial solidarity.
Throughout the event, Ukrainians and Dutch citizens engaged with the speakers in English and Dutch. A Ukrainian human rights activist named Peter van De Vries said he would send the rally video to the European Parliament to increase international awareness. Some Ukrainians spontaneously sang and danced along with the resistance song, adding energy and emotion to the rally.
Highlights of Speeches
Human Rights Activist Yue San from Henan, China
Yue San, speaking as an exiled human rights defender, exposed China’s role in the war:
Xi Jinping’s regime is complicit in Putin’s aggression. If China stops supporting Russia, the war could end tomorrow. I call on EU nations not to indulge in illusions about cooperating with the CCP. Standing with Ukraine is standing for humanity’s future. History will remember the aggressors and their accomplices.
Chinese Democracy Party Member Sui Xiaobo
Sui Xiaobo emphasized that peace must be based on justice:
Without justice, peace is merely the prelude to another war. Supporting Ukraine also supports Taiwan and all societies defending democracy. The voices raised at Dam Square continue Europe’s tradition of freedom. Silence is complicity.
He pointed out that China, North Korea, and other authoritarian states have formed a de facto wartime alliance, and urged the international community to block all gray channels that fuel the war.
Cantonia Dissident Jiang Peikun
Jiang Peikun highlighted Ukraine’s historical struggle for freedom:
In 1991, over 90 percent of Ukrainians voted for independence, a spirit that now shines across Europe again. Behind Putin’s invasion, the CCP provides crucial supplies. Xi Jinping’s claim of not wanting Russia to fail exposes China’s selfish position. Ukraine’s struggle is not only about defending its country but also about defending shared values of democracy, freedom, and human rights.
Jiang led attendees in chanting:
Down with Putin
Down with Xi Jinping
Down with the CCP
Free Ukraine
Free the Chinese People
Henan Rights Advocate Xing Songlin
Xing Songlin highlighted China’s pseudo-neutral stance:
China repeatedly abstained from UN resolutions condemning Russia, became a major buyer of Russian energy and materials, and distorted domestic media narratives to mislead the public. This not only condones aggression but also inflicts a second harm on the Ukrainian people. Russia’s crimes will be judged, and all states supporting them will face historical condemnation.
Cantonia Independence Advocate Liu Feilong
Liu Feilong connected personal experience with broader anti-colonial solidarity:
Cantonia is occupied by China, like Ukraine once was under the Soviet Union. I am here because I opposed the CCP and served three years in prison. That experience made me understand the value of freedom. Let us pray together: Freedom for Ukraine, Cantonia, Guangxi, Tibet, East Turkestan, Southern Mongolia, Hong Kong, Jinland. Dismantle China, dismantle Russia, bring peace to the world.
Interactions and International Response
During the rally, Ukrainians and Dutch citizens frequently took photos and engaged in discussions with the Chinese participants. Many expressed surprise at the courage of Chinese civil society voices and offered applause and encouragement. An elderly Ukrainian attendee noted: “Seeing Chinese people raising flags and shouting Slava Ukraini with us today gives me faith in the power of freedom.”
Significance and Impact
The Amsterdam Dam Square rally was not only a commemoration of Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day but also a demonstration of international solidarity. Exiled Chinese human rights defenders and anti-colonial activists exposed the collusion between Russia and China, urging Europe and the world not to remain silent.
Freedom will win. Tyranny will fall. Together, we stand with Ukraine.
Ukraine’s struggle has become a global symbol of the fight for freedom. The voices raised at Dam Square will echo in history: the sound of freedom cannot be silenced by bombs, and the power of solidarity will eventually overcome tyranny.
