"Where
there is unity, there is life." – Uyghur Proverb
The
blessed month of Ramadan is not merely a period of religious observance; it is
a profound opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and bridge the
gaps between diverse cultures. On March 3rd, I attended a meaningful Iftar
organized by the East Turkistan Education Association in Europe. This event was
far more than a traditional breaking of the fast; it served as a vital platform
to share our cause, our pain, and our aspirations with Dutch policymakers,
mayors, and various civil organizations.
The
Iftar: A Stage for National Identity
Despite
being one of the smaller minority groups in Dutch society, the Uyghur community
demonstrates its presence, resilient cultural foundations, and national
identity through such events. Our unique culinary heritage at the Iftar table
is not just a display of flavors, but a wordless language that introduces our
identity to other cultures. These gatherings are crucial for strengthening our
connection with the world and asserting that we are an integral and
contributing part of this society.
Deepening
Friendship with Local Government
One of
the highlights of the evening was the presence of the Mayor of Zeist, Mrs.
Joyce Langenacker. While Mrs. Langenacker has consistently supported us by
visiting the annual "Uyghur Food Fair," this was her first time
attending a community Iftar and delivering a speech. Her participation
reaffirms the local government's respect and sincere concern for the Uyghur
people. This support significantly solidifies the standing of Uyghurs within
Dutch society.
Political
Dialogue: Amplifying Our Voice in the Political Arena
During
the Iftar, the leader of the DENK party, Mr. Stephan van Baarle, delivered a
powerful speech in support of the Uyghur cause. I had the opportunity to speak
with him personally to discuss the current urgent situation of our people. I
utilized this moment to inform him about the brutal transnational repression I
faced during my peaceful protest on February 14th (Lunar New Year), during
which crucial evidence in the form of a live video was removed from platform X.
Mr. Van
Baarle showed a high level of concern regarding this matter and requested that
I send him all relevant documentation. I informed him that I am currently
awaiting the official police report (aangifte) and will provide him with the
strongest evidence as soon as the document is in my possession.
A New
Beginning: Official Reception and Dialogue
The
most encouraging news is that Mr. Stephan van Baarle has committed to
officially receiving a Uyghur delegation after Ramadan to conduct a specialized
discussion regarding the current situation in East Turkistan and the Uyghur
cause in the Netherlands.
The more we engage in these types of social and diplomatic gatherings, the greater our opportunity to express our national and political identity. Whether through local mayors or members of parliament, the strong ties we build are essential steps in protecting our identity and demanding our fundamental rights. These efforts testify to our tireless pursuit of peace, justice, and freedom.
