Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere - Martin Luther King. Jr
When drinking water, do not forget those who dug the well." — Uyghur Proverb
Dear residents of The Hague and defenders of freedom,
The Hague is recognized globally as the City of Peace, Justice, and Democracy. It is the world's moral compass. However, on February 14, 2026, this proud symbol was besmirched. During the Chinese Lantern Festival celebration in the Atrium of the City Hall (Stadhuis), an unprecedented attack on democratic values occurred. The brute aggression against me, a peaceful Uyghur demonstrator, was a black stain on the reputation of The Hague as a city of justice.
While I was peacefully exercising my right to freedom of expression, I was grabbed by the neck by supporters of the Chinese regime, my banner was forcibly taken, and I was removed with violence. This mistreatment was not only an attack on me but a direct threat of transnational repression in the political heart of the Netherlands.
The Uyghur voice resonated loudly in the council chamber!
Three courageous council members did not let this injustice go unpunished. Hera Butt (GroenLinks), Samir Ahraui (PvdA), and Lotte van Basten Batenburg (VVD) showed political leadership and asked 10 penetrating questions to the executive board. Thanks to their determination, the College of Mayor and Aldermen (B&W) has now officially recognized: the way I was treated was "unacceptable."
Why is this essential?
The Hague is the political epicenter of the Netherlands. When the Uyghur voice sounds powerfully here, it resonates across the globe. Protecting Uyghur rights in this city is a crucial step in stopping transnational repression by China.
My urgent call for March 18:
We must support the politicians who stood up for us when we were attacked. They chose justice over political convenience. I therefore call on all Uyghurs and all righteous citizens in The Hague: cast your vote on March 18 for the candidates of GroenLinks-PvdA and the VVD.
Make your voice count against oppression. Cast your vote for those who strengthen the voice of justice!
